Leadership requires more than presiding over meetings, greeting visiting dignitaries, and cutting ribbons.

Real leadership demands focus that recognizes problems, vision that identifies solutions, skills that bring together affected persons and institutions, and rolling up shirtsleeves and doing the hard work to get the job done right.

This is the leadership that Bob Sheckler gives the citizens of Des Moines today, just as he has for more than 15 years – serving four terms on the City Council including eight years as Mayor.

Des Moines stands at a crossroads. One road leads to a dynamic future that taps our City’s potential and energizes our community. The other is a path to nowhere that would lock us in the past.

That’s why economic development in Des Moines is the single plank in my platform for re-election this year.

Economic development is a challenge we must welcome – not because it is easy, but because it is right – if our City is to move forward for all our citizens.
